Potatoes are a fairly common garden crop that no farmer can do without. To introduce new varieties into circulation, you need to know several methods of potato propagation.

First method: Reproduction by sprouts.
In order to propagate potatoes by sprouts, they must be germinated in a lighted place at room temperature a month before planting. Already germinated tubers are placed in a box with prepared soil to a depth of 7 to 9 cm. It is necessary to create a distance of up to 25 cm between the seedlings. The first shoots are visible after 17 days, a little later leaves form. It is during this period that it is necessary to dig up the tuber and divide it into sprouts, without damaging them and leaving them with a rosette of leaves. You can plant it in open ground, but always under a film. Creating favorable conditions for the tuber guarantees at least the appearance of 25 new potato plants ready for planting.
Second method: Reproduction by seeds.
Seeds are most often used to grow new varieties. You can buy them in specialized stores by weight (1 g contains about 2 thousand seeds, this is enough to produce seedlings per 1 hectare of land). The required number of seeds is sown in the prepared soil mixture containing the necessary nutrients. The appropriate time period for this is April. Sowing depth no more than 1.5 cm per 1 m? use 0.5 g of seeds. Before the first shoots form, the soil needs to be moistened and watered. After sprouts appear, reduce watering to once every 2-3 days. After 45 days, the seedlings are fed with urea (5 liters of water per 1 tablespoon of raw material). Sprouts can be planted in the ground when they reach 10-12 cm in height. When planting, water the plant only if the soil is dry and plant it, leaving 3-4 leaves on the surface. Throughout this time, potatoes must be processed in the usual way: watering, irrigating the soil and controlling pests and diseases.
Third method: Reproduction by parts of the tuber.
To reduce the consumption of planting material, you can grow potatoes from tuber segments. To do this, it must be cut into 2 parts (if the tuber is large, then into 4) so that each half has an eye. Place the sliced parts in a warm room in a small layer, cut side up. Before planting, sprinkle with ash and plant as whole tubers. The soil must be well-fed and fertile, and a site must be selected with sufficient penetrating light.
Fourth method: Apical meristem method.
This option is used in agrotechnical laboratories. To carry out this type of propagation, it is necessary to obtain seed potatoes grown using apical meristem technology. This strategy will reduce the consumption of planting material to 14 kg per hundred square meters, and the yield will be up to 600 kg. Potatoes grown in this way are practically resistant to viral infections and diseases that damage plants.
